Glossary

Benard Cells: A color defect resulting from differential solvent evaporation producing a hexagonal celled surface with accumulation of pigments and/or an immiscible phase at the air interface.
Recommended products: 3, 56, 57, 5790, 64, 218, 231

Corrosion: Deterioration of metal or concrete by chemical or electro-chemical reaction by reaction with agents in its environment.
Recommended products: 41, 60, 75, 80, 85, 90

Cratering: Small bowl shaped depressions in a coating film, which frequently have drops of material in their centers and raised circular edges.
Recommended products: 3, 56, 57, 5790, 61, 64, 74, 231

Dispersion: The process of dispersing a powder in a liquid so that the individual particles of the powder become separated from each other and are evenly distributed throughout the liquid.
Recommended products: 6, 56, 57, 5790, 61, 63, 94, 273

Emulsification: The process of combining two immiscible liquids such that droplets of one are completely surrounded by the other. For example, water in oil or oil in water.
Recommended product: 63

Fish Eyes: Droplets that are incompatible and appear as a dimple.
Recommended products: 3, 56, 57, 5790, 64, 74, 231

Flash Rust: A form of corrosion, which takes place during the drying process of a water based coating. The corrosion produced may migrate through the film giving a colored stain to the film.
Recommended products: 60, 80, 90, 218

Floating: A defect occurring in paint containing two or more pigments when one of the pigments rises to the surface giving a streaky or variegated effect.
Recommended products: 3, 56, 57, 5790, 64, 231

Gellation: The process of forming a structure within a liquid to increase its viscosity and retard its ability to flow.
Recommended product: 77

Hammertone: The effect produced by an insoluble silicone, which modifies the surface tension of a coating non-uniformly causing the surface to look hammered.
Recommended products: 66, 88

Leveling: The measure of the ability of a coating to flow out to a smooth film eliminating any film imperfections caused by the mechanics of the application.
Recommended products: 3, 15, 56, 57, 5790, 61, 62, 64, 66, 74, 110, 111, 112, 231

Mar Resistance: The property of the surface of a coating, which imparts slip rather than adding more drag.
Recommended products: 26, 43, 68

Microwrinkling: A very fine wrinkle pattern on the surface of a film.  May appear to be a gloss loss although on examination with a microscope, the wrinkling will be evident.
Recommended products: 3, 64, 231

Pin Holes: Coating defects, which occur when air or solvent vapor attempts to leave the curing film and the path remains open rather than flowing back together.
Recommended products: 3, 56, 57, 5790, 61, 64, 74

Sagging: Non-uniform, downward flow of a paint film, which occurs between application and the setting of the film.
Recommended products: 6, 38, 63, 72, 94, 158

Settling: The separation of pigment from the vehicle of a paint during storage. This occurs because the pigments are not properly dispersed and/or not completely surrounded by dispersant. Settling can be soft (easily reincorporable) or hard (requiring energy to reincorporate).
Recommended products: 6, 15, 38, 56, 57, 5790, 61, 63, 72, 94, 158

Silking: Parallel irregularities left on the surface of a dried film of paint.
Recommended products: 3, 56, 57, 5790, 64, 231

Stability: The equilibration of electrical charges and chemical attraction to provide an environment for long term storage.
Recommended products: 6, 38, 41, 56, 57, 5790, 60, 61, 63, 72, 80, 85, 90, 94, 158

Static Control: The ability to conduct away static electric charge from a coating. Particularly important in nitro cellulose lacquers where a static arc can produce a fire.
Recommended products: 82, 210

Viscosity: The property of a liquid in which it resists relative motion within itself. Normally considered resistance to flow.
Recommended products (Viscosity Increase): 38, 63, 72, 77, 158
Recommended products (Viscosity Decrease): 6, 56, 57, 5790, 94

Wetting: The power a liquid possesses of spreading rapidly and uniformly over a surface of a powdered pigment or a substrate.
Recommended products: 3, 6, 15, 56, 57, 5790, 61, 62, 64, 68, 85, 94, 273
